1974 914 2.0
My dad bought this 914 in 2000. When he got it, it had an ugly front spoiler, red horn grilles, big springs in the back that made it high and a dent in the rear fender. A lot has been done since then, including an engine rebuild. It could still use a paint job and the dent still needs fixed.

Modifications
-This car has had dual Weber carbs since the 1970's. The current set are 40 IDF models. They make for a better performing car.

-It also has a big bore kit which was added by the previous owner. That makes it somthing like 2.1 liters rather than just 2 liters.

The car has been lowered a bit. As low as the suspension will allow in the front.

-The new Bursch exhaust probably adds a few horse power over the stock system, and it sounds good too.

-The car rides on the original wheels, but with a set of Pirelli 195/15 P6 tires.

-The interior has a Blaupunkt CD player, new carpet and a NEW! (finally) vinyl back pad.

- The cheap little electric horn has been replace with dual tone Hella air horns. Just like the ones on 911s and Ferraris!

-There is a VDO oil pressure and oil temperature gauge installed under the dash.

-Infinity speakers that actually fit in the stock speaker grilles. (It took some pieces of Erector set to do it, but it works)

-Newest mod: Petronix electronic ignition and "flame thrower" 40,000 volt coil. This makes quite a significant difference in performance. I recommend this for any car currently using points style ingnition.

What's it like now?
The 914 has been back on the road since April. Not much happened over the winter. The biggest thing was a rebuilt odometer. It stopped shortly after we got the car at just over 52,000 miles. My dad decided to tackle this job himself and yes, it did work until it hit 52,225. Then it just gave up again. Oh well. We finaly got the new chrome "PORSCHE" letters for the engine grille. (you must be ooh-ing and ahh-ing at home) Small inmprovements but they are nice ones. Like H. Royce of Rolls Royce said, "small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing."
The 914 does like to pump out its own oil due to a faulty gasket on the end of the crank shaft. So we stay well stocked with Pennzoil. Fixing the problem would involve droping the engine, and that can wait till winter. In addition to the VDO oil pressure gauge, we added an oil temp gauge. The new ignition system and coil makes a big difference in performance. Too bad we didn't have that earlier.

The latest wierd thing:
Durring a rather long interstate journey, the 914 developed a wierd missfire. (this is before the new ignition & coil was installed) It ran fine up to redline in first gear. At about 5000rpm in second gear, it seemed to loose a cylinder or something. It ran fine up till then. After it hit 5000, then it would run poorly throughout the middle part of the rev range in the next gear(s). It made no sense. why would in run fine in first and get progressively worse throught he gears? The world may never know. We checked points, distributor advance, plugs, timing, fuel filter, distributor cap, carborettor floats. Nothing worked. Then, we tried the coil and distributor rotor simultaneously. IT WORKED! Why? I have no idea.
