The John Deere hits twenty years.
It's been twenty years since our John Deere 750 first placed it's tires on the Rothwell property. And it has served us well. It's seen several tours of duty mowing our front yard, hauling brush and trees, and pulling stuff out of the ground. And with under 700hrs on the clock, it will likely be doing a lot more of that stuff for years to come.

When it was new. The 750 was purchased in June of 1982 from a dealership that was going out of bussiness. The price then was around 6 grand. It came with the Bridgestone turf tires, and a "belly" mower. Later, a Yanmar plow was purchased, but it was discovered that plowing anything with it was rather unproductive with the turf tires. Oh, well, it still works well for other things. During the course of 20 years, it lost an amber light after an incounter with a tree branch, and has had a mower wheel replaced. At about 650 hrs. (last fall), the transmission/hydraulic fluid was finally changed.

There it is twenty years ago, being piloted by my dad. This pic was taken behind the house. We don't use the JD for mowing there anymore. It's pretty much limited to "the field". Our big front lawn. Smaller mowing and yard work jobs go to the Wheel Horse 520 hydro.

Yes, it's made in Japan Beginning in 1977, John Deere's entire compact utility line was made by Yanmar Diesel Engine company of Osaka Japan. Many (if not all) of John Deere's current small tractors are still made by Yanmar. However, the 750 is not just a re-badged Yanmar. If you would compare the two, you will notice different hoods, fenders, and other little things. It's not hard to tell that the tractor was made in Japan. The manufacture plate says right on it, made by Yanmar in Osaka Japan. The plate on the engine has Yanmar right on it. No hiding it. And no need to. This tractor is built to an extremely high standard. It's got the reliability of a Honda or Toyota. Yanmar is known for their exceptional Diesel engines. This 3 cylinder will start right up in freezing cold with just a few seconds of the glow plug.

There it is. The three cylinder Yanmar Diesel engine. (this is a recent photo)

Here's the specs:

ENGINE:
Power: (at PTO) 18hp @ 2400 rpm
Bore& Stroke: 3.15 x 3.35 in
Compression Ratio: 22.5:1
Displacement: 1281 cc

TRANSMISSION:
eight forward speeds and two reverse. High and low range with differential lock

TOP SPEED:
11.4 mph.

And it lives on... The 750 still has under 700 hours on it. That's not much at all. It's always kept in the garage in it's place in front of the Porsche. Since 1982 it's gotten a few little scratches and dings, but it's still almost like new and runs perfectly. It recently managed to pull out the stump of an old sickly pine tree we cut down. It may only have 18hp, but it's got enough torque to do some good pulling. Soon fall will be here and it will do a few more mowing jobs, then it's away for winter on it's way to year 21.

After a long wait I got a roll of film developed. So here it is. The John Deere as it looked in the summer of 2002.
