Why I HATE NASCAR
There are so many reasons why I hate NASCAR. I hate everything about it. Lets start with the NASCAR itself. For a car that's supposed to be a "stock-car", there is NOTHING stock about it. A Porsche 911 running at Le Mans is actually based on a 911 that you can buy. Same engine block, same chassis, same body shell. A so called Dodge Intrepid "stock-car" has about as much in common with a road going Intrepid as a duck does with a hippo. The body on a NASCAR is special made to fit over the custom tube frame! And to make matters worse, NASCAR has about as many regulations on what the car looks like as Formula One does! Every NASCAR has to fit into the same NASCAR mandated templates. There is not one piece of that Dodge NASCAR that you will find on an Intrepid at your local Dodge dealer. Another thing is how technologically un-advanced they are. Why do they still use carbs? F1 has used fuel injection since the 60s. Every single REAL Dodge, Ford, Pontiac, or Chevrolet has fuel injection. NASCARs all have the same basic engine block too! These "stock-cars" are really just spec racers. NASCAR claims this is to keep the costs down. Just stop and think about that for a second. The intelligent thing to do would be to make the cars use a real production body shell and engine block. Just like the BMW 5-series that you see running in endurance racing. That way they dont have to make an entirely new car. Rather than making the suspensions in NASCARS adjustable like andy formula car, they decided do move lead ballast around in the cars to balance things out. In Formula One, you can adjust the suspension settings and wing settings to do that job. If the F1 guys need to meet the minimum weight limit, they use spent uranium rather than lead. That may be a cheap shot, but I hate NASCAR. I also can't figure out the labyrinthian rule system. I won't even start on that. I find the sponsors of the cars to be interesting. Tide, Skittles, and Viagra are not you typical motor racing sponsors. NASCAR makes attemts at road racing tracks at Watkins Glen, but the NASCARS and drivers seem to have a terrible time getting around. Oval tracks are OK, but at least have the skills to drive on a real road course. That's what CART does. CART, of course, being REAL motor racing. NASCAR also has more cars than anyone can keep track of. come on. 40 cars? Well, it just makes me wonder why it's the most popular spectator sport in America.

A Look at Style
When I look through european car magazines, I see all kinds of interesting things from Ford. The Puma, Mondeo, KA, and Fiesta. What do we have here from Ford that looks interesting? Well, the Focus and...um...oh yes, the Mercury Cougar. Things like the Escort, Tarus, Windstar and Crown Victoria leave somthing to be desired. Chrysler seems to be making some attempts at well styled cars with the Intrepid and other things, but the PT Cruiser seems to be taking things too far. The Neon also looks like it could use some work. The new Dodge Rams look like they were in a G-force simulator. The worst is GM. I still can't belive the Aztec. It looks like a cross between a Horshoe crab and an early Vickers tank. There was some guy in France that blew up Citroen DS's because he thought they were so ugly. I think somebody needs to do that here with the Aztec. Cadillac's entire styling department must have turned into a bunch of alcoholics and drug users. What is that CTS? The Deville isn't much better. American cars are not the only ones. Subaru really needs to take some lessons from Volkswagen or even Honda. The Subarus have all kinds of pointless cladding and goofy add-on air scoops. Kia, Daewoo, and Hyundae all need to quit making cars that look like a worn down bar of soap. The cheap chrome accents that the Koreans like to put on them does not help. And finally BMW. Yes BMW. BMWs always looked rather handsome. A bit square looking but not bad at all. Then thye came out with the new 7 series. I think the designers at BMW had a few too many Becks' when thay came up with that. The head lights look like regular BMW lights that were melted and streched over the front end, and the trunk apears to be an after thought. The tail lights have three ridges in them that remind me of a Plymouth Breeze. I really hope they don't spoil their other products that way.

The US auto industry works in intersting ways.
While Ford has been bringing some very European cars to America, like the Focus and Cougar, it is keeping away some good ones. Ford is going to drop the lame old Contour and Mercury Mistique in the US. The Contour is badged as a Mondeo in Europe, and the new Mondeo will not come here. This is a real shame because the new Mondeo is a great car! Unlike the model it replaces, it has plenty of room, new edge styling, and respectable build quality. That's not the only thing. The Ford Puma is a great car that we may never see in America. I say it would be worth dumping the Mustang in favor of it. The Ford KA could be a popular car among city dwellers and people that want a cheaper car. BUT, don't expect to see it here. While ford has been trying some European cars here, GM certainly has not. That is until the new Chevrolet Cavalier comes out. That will be a re-badged Opel right from Germany. There will be very little changed on the car from the Opel model. It is expected to be a three or five door hatch-back. I would like to see more of this going on. We could be seing Chevrolet badged Vauxhauls and Opels.
