Sprint Vintage GP at Mid-Ohio
Can you identify the man with his foot on the side of that Martini sponsored Porsche 908? It's Bobby Rahal. He drove the 908 in the event but because it is a newly restored car, he didn't have great luck with it. He did win the 1hr. enduro in another Porsche. We got the chance to say hi to Bobby in the garrages. As for the rest of the event, there were Triumphs everywhere. Triumph being the features marque. Weather was a little on the rainy side but Sunday turned out to be good. On Saturday night, before the rain, you could stand in the campground and watch a tavern/bar burning in nearby Mansfield until the fire department put it out. That was interesting. I almost prefer to camp out at the races. It's nice to just sit outside and talk abot cars. If you get board, you can walk into the paddock and look arround. We know a racer that we visit after the events are over. At night you can even sneek onto the track and take a walk around. The only time it's not fun outside is whan its really cold and rainy. Then you're just misserable.

Pittsburgh Vintage GP.
This is always a good event. The race is run through the roads of Schenley park in down-town Pittsburgh. As always, there were some very rare and intesting cars to be seen. There were THREE real live Bugatti GP cars. Two were 8 cyl. and one was a 4 cyl. There was also a supercharged MG. (like a Magnate or something like that). The featured car was Porsche so there were plenty of them to be seen. As always, there were an abundance of exotic Italian cars. Two Ferrari Dinos (one w/ removable top), about three of four Lamborghini Diablos, and many many more. The quality of the show cars is done to a very high standard. Many of them in concours condition. This event is a must see if you can.

CART at Mid Ohio
Sorry the story for this got lost. Oh well. Wait a few months and I'll have a new one. That picure it from the 2002 event though.

SCCA Runnoffs
The Runoffs had pretty decent wheather this year as compared to years past that were held in 30 degree temperatures. The only rain was Friday night. Saturday was nice and Sunday threatened rain but it didn't come. The big name of the weekend was not Huffaker or Beasely. It was Newman. As in Paul Newman, you know, the actor. (see piture above) He drove an ex trans-am Jaguar XK8 in GT-1. He started mid pack and had a great race. He did get bumped going out of the esses and had a spin but he did quite well for a 77 year old. We saw Paul in the paddock as he got ready to go out for practace. Another interesting thing was the Geo Metro / Suzuki Swift race car. Most unusual. But it wasn't too bad of a race car. There were about five 914 race cars. One of which is apparently the first 914 in the United States. The owner told us that is was a car used for auto shows and dealer demonstrations. I'm looking forward to next year, unfortunately, it's a whole year away.
